Tip, tricks and techniques
Want to grow large crystals? These are general instructions for growth crystals that can be the use of glass recipes. You can find recipes and information on crystal structures in crystal growth section. Here are the basics, to start and help you troubleshoot:
What are crystals?
The crystals are structures that form repeated a regular pattern of atoms or molecules related. Crystals grow by a process called nucleation. During nucleation, the atoms or molecules to crystallize (solute) are dissolved in its individual units in a solvent. The solute particles contact each other and connect. This subunit is larger than a single particle so more particles will contact and connect with her.
Over time, this core of the crystal grows enough that is outside the solution (crystallizes). Other solute molecules continue to attach to the glass surface, which increases until an equilibrium is reached or balance between solute molecules in the crystal and those who remain in solution.
The basic technique
1.Make a solution saturated.
2.Start a garden or grow a seed crystal.
3.Continue growth.
In order to grow glass, which need a solution that maximizes the potential of solute particles to come together and form a nucleus, which becomes the glass. This means that you will want a concentrated solution with as much solute can dissolve (saturated solution). Sometimes nucleation can occur simply through interactions between the solute particles in the solution (called unassisted nucleation), but sometimes it is better always a kind of meeting place of the particles solute added (assisted nucleation). A rough surface tends to be more attractive to the nucleation of a smooth surface. For example, a crystal is likely to begin to form on a piece of rough rope on the soft side of a glass.
Make a saturated solution
It is best to start your crystals with a saturated solution. A more dilute solution will saturate the air evaporates some liquid, but the evaporation is time (days, weeks). You will receive your crystals more quickly if the solution is saturated, for starters. In addition, there may come a time when it is necessary to add more liquid to the solution glass. If your solution is anything but saturated, then dispose of his work and actually dissolve the crystals! Prepare a saturated solution by adding the crystal of solute (eg, alum, sugar, salt) to the solvent (usually water, although some recipes may require other solvents). Stirring help to dissolve the solute. Sometimes you may want to apply heat to help dissolve the solute. Use boiling water or sometimes even heat the solution on the stove on an oven or microwave.
Growing a garden of glass or Geode '
If you want to grow a mass of crystals or a crystal garden, you can pour the saturated solution onto a substrate (rocks, bricks, sponge), cover the plant with a paper towel or coffee filter to prevent dust and the liquid to evaporate slowly.
The growth of a seed crystal
On the other hand, if you're trying to grow a larger crystal, you win need to obtain a seed crystal. A method to obtain a seed crystal is to pour a small amount of saturated solution on a plate, left drop evaporation, and scrape the crystals formed at the bottom to use as seeds. Another method is to pour a saturated solution in a very smooth container (like a glass bottle) and hang a hard object (like a piece of string) in the liquid. Small crystals will start growing in the chain, which can be used as crystals seed.
Crystal Growth & Cleaning
If the seed crystal is a string, pour the liquid into a clean container (Otherwise crystals eventually grow into the glass and compete with the glass) to suspend the string in the liquid, cover with a paper towel or coffee filter (do not close with a lid!), and continue to grow the crystal. Pour the liquid into a clean container every time you see the growth of crystals in the package.
If you selected a seed of a plate, tying the game on a nylon fishing line (too soft to be attractive to the crystals, so their seed can grow without competition), suspend the glass in a clean container with a saturated solution, and grow your crystal in the same way that the seeds that were originally on a string.
Keep the Treasures
Crystals that were made of a water (aqueous) solution dissolves a little in the humid air. Keep your beautiful crystal stored in a container dry and closed. You may want to wrap in paper to keep it dry and prevent dust from accumulating on it. Some crystals can be protected by being sealed with a coating acrylic (such as Future floor polish), although applying the acrylic will dissolve the outermost layer of glass.
