2-3-4 [LP] $72.98 Personnel: Shelly Manne (drums), Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone), Eddie Costa (vibraphone, piano), Hank Jones (piano), George Duvivier (bass).Recorded in 1962.This unusual CD reissue has five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Cherokee” find the group at times playing two tempos at once (Manne sticks to doubletime throughout “Cherokee”) and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, “Avalon,” was previously available only on a sampler while “Me and Some Drums” features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. This CD is rounded off by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises. ~ Scott Yanow |

Originally released on Contemporary (7535). Includes original liner notes by Nat Hentoff.Digitally remastered using 20-bit K2 Super Coding System technology. On this aptly titled 1957 album, critically lauded musicians Barney Kessel (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Shelly Manne (drums) were united as a jazz supergroup, yielding predictably stellar results. Given the spare trio setup, each player has moments in the spotlight, though Kessel naturally leads every tune with his deft, delicate six-string work. Highlights of the lightly swinging, bebop-tinged record include a laid-back take on “Satin Doll” and a sauntering rendition of “On Green Dolphin Street.” |

A Quest In The Middle East $49.79 Revered or reviled, Gertrude Bell was a commanding figure: scholar, linguist, archaeologist, traveler and Orientalist. Belonging to the tradition of the great British Middle East enthusiasts of the early twentieth century, she explored the Ottoman Empire during and after World War I and was (alongside T.E. Lawrence) hugely instrumental in the post-war reconfiguration of the Arab states in the Middle East. Using previously unseen sources, including Gertrude Bell’’s own diaries and letters, Liora Lukitz provides a deeper political and personal biography of this influential character and the tragedy, vulnerability and frustration that were key to her quest both for a British-dominated Middle East and relief from her troubled romantic life. |

Originally released on Contemporary (7530). Includes original liner notes by Lester Koenig.Sonny Rollins was always gifted with a brawny, expressive tone and a formidable sense of swing. But on SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS he conveyed a new-found harmonic confidence and a singular sense of thematic continuity that gave each improvisation a transcendent quality. And his attack, always cutting and direct, took on immense weight and warmth. For his first trip out to California in March of 1957, Rollins celebrated his boyhood fascination with western imagery by interpreting classic cowpoke tunes. With WAY OUT WEST, Sonny was no longer simply a gifted sideman, but a consummate tenor saxophonist–ready to stretch out as a leader–and he made the bold decision to dispense entirely with the piano and carry the full harmonic/melodic load in a trio format. This unlikely combination of elements gives WAY OUT WEST a special place in jazz history. The veteran rhythm combo of drummer Shelly Manne and bassist Ray Brown are so clearly inspired by Rollins’ youthful exuberance, that they transform the unlikeliest of themes–”I’m An Old Cowhand” and “Wagon Wheels”–into jazz anthems. On two takes of the former, Manne and Brown put you right in the saddle with clanking hooves and campfire counterpoint, and when Sonny yodels his final yippi-yi-yo-ki-yea, they settle into a ravishing medium groove that could swing you…well, until the cows come home. Sonny’s ballad mastery is no les |

Somewhere Before [Import] $12.99 Keith Jarrett Trio: Keith Jarrett (piano); Charlie Haden (bass); Paul Motian (drums).Recorded live at Shelly’s Manne-Hole, Hollywood, California on August 30 and 31, 1968. Originally released on Vortex (2012). Includes liner notes by George Avakian.Keith Jarrett was just 23 at the time of this 1968 trio performance at Shelly’s Manne Hole in Hollywood, California. At this time he was pianist for the Charles Lloyd Quartet, but was already beginning to find his own voice as a leader. This would of course come to full flower in the next decade, but at this juncture he’s capably and innovatively exploring a number of different idioms. The opening notes of the album come from Charlie Haden’s distinct and resonant bass, as he delineates the chordal structure of Dylan’s “My Back Pages.”Both Haden and drummer Paul Motian would continue with Jarrett in his classic ensemble throughout the ’70s. From gospel reveries to Bill Evans-inspired classicism to jagged post-bop explosiveness, it’s exciting to hear this important pianist and composer in his early years. |

Foreign Affairs [Import] [3/10] $42.99 Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, piano); Bette Midler (vocals); Gene Cipriano (clarinet); Frank Vicari (tenor saxophone); Jack Sheldon (trumpet); Jim Hughart (bass); Shelly Manne (drums).Recorded at Filmways/Heider Recording Studios, Hollywood, California in July & August 1978.FOREIGN AFFAIRS is the most ambitious of Waits’ ’70s albums. In addition to the West Coast jazz style his early work drew so heavily on (here he goes to the source, with vet Shelly Manne on the drum stool), there’s also a bit of lavish orchestration to solidify the classy bygone-era feel of Waits’ songs. Perfect losers’ love songs like “Muriel” were always his bread and butter, but the elegant’40s-ish balladry of “I Never Talk to Strangers” (a good-humored beaty-wooed-by-the-beast duet) and the epic beat poetry excursion “Potter’s Field” were the furthest extensions to date of Waits’ ambitions. Ironically, things are most interesting when the arrangements are scaled down, as on the contagiously sentimental barroom ballad “Sight For Sore Eyes.” |

Mr Lucky Goes Latin $20.99 Mancini recasts some of the numbers he wrote for the popular CBS TV series Mr. Lucky in a Latin light vein. This 1961 release also features two of his best cuts in a circus-minded mix of harpsichord and trombone called “Rain Drops in Rio” and the noirish ballad “Blue Mantilla”; once again, Mancini strikes a fine balance between jazz atmospherics and lounge flourishes. And furthering his stock in after-hours slinkiness, Mancini goes widescreen on layered stunners like “Lujon” and “The Sound of Silver,” while taking the conga line to over-the-top extremes on the glibly titled “Cow Bells and Coffee Beans.” Topped off by stellar contributions from the likes of Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, pianist Jimmy Rowles, and drummer Shelly Manne, Mr. Lucky Goes Latin qualifies as yet another highly entertaining release from Mancini’s early-’60s prime. ~ Stephen Cook |

Best of all: the Satchmo-Kaye When The Saints Go Marching In duet, with the legends scat singing a list of music world saints and adding a little Frere Jacques too! |
