Types of Room Lighting

Lighting is one of the most vital aspects of product merchandise and store visibility. Providing the right amount of light at the right time and place is always a challenge for a lighting designer. Lighting should be considered a sales tool in retail environments. It can be used to entice customers into the store, lead them through merchandise areas, call attention to specific merchandise, and draw customers through the transaction process – all the while conveying specific moods or enhancing merchandising themes. Effective use of light can dramatically enhance the performance of most retail environments

Depending on the requirement of light we can broadly classified lighting into three types,

1. General Lighting

2. Task Lighting

3. Accent Lighting

Generally people need full illumination of room so that every one can see the room very clearly. For example like path lighting, wall or ceiling fixtures etc are used for illuminating the room. This type of lighting is known as General Lighting.

Sometime people want to perform certain activities such as reading writing or dressing, for this purpose they don’t required full illumination of the room, they just want the amount of the light which is sufficient for them to perform certain task. Task Lighting is use for this type of lighting. Pendant lights, portable lamps, as well as lower-level lighting comes under this category.

Accent lighting is basically used for decorating the room. They are mainly used for focusing certain interested area on the wall or any where inside the room like a painting or any an unusual wall texture etc.
